Back in the days, in the early days, long before the days of Nightmare Moon and before Celestia became the sole ruler of Equestria for over three hundred and fifty thousand nights, a young princess Luna would often find herself alone in the dead hours, wandering the castle, castle grounds and the citizens of Equestria’s dreams unsupervised.
Celestia grew worried with her baby sister and decided that such situation could not continue. So the position of night maid was created. A pony called Silver Dust was selected among the regular maids due to her unusual sleep pattern, always preferring the late hour shifts when the halls were nice and quiet and the overall work was a lot easier to do. Luna been stubborn as always found the idea absolutely outrageous. How could she, the proud and important alicorn ruler of the night, a princess of Equestria need an over glorified babysitter.
The little princess stomped around, huffing and puffing for several days in the most absolute fury for being submitted to this unbelievable indignity, but in the end, she had no choice but to submit to the desire of her big sister.
In time she ended up growing accustomed to the idea of having a night maid. The night’s weren’t so lonely anymore and it sure was nice having someone to help her out with anything she needed at all times. After Silver Dust retired, Luna had two more night maids until the dreadful years where she grew so bitter and distant from everyone to the point where she became the monstrous Nightmare Moon.
After she was saved by Twilight and the elements of harmony, her return to regular life was anything but gentle. It was hard adapting to regular life in Equestria after being away for so long.
Her mannerisms were outdated and everything she said and did was met with weirded and curious reactions by her subjects and castle staff. For a while she thought that maybe it would have been better staying in the moon forever, a lost relic of the past, no more than a urban legend, an old ponies tale.
Celestia once again decided that intervention was necessary on behalf of her sister and remembered of the forgotten staff position of night maid. more than ever the idea was met with objection from the night princess, but Celestia argued that if Luna truly desired to adapt and resume her duties as a princess of Equestria, some help would be needed.
Unlike the first night maid, which was chosen exclusively due to her unusual sleep habits, Agnis Silvercoat was select between over a hundred candidates. A Highly educated mare, holding several degrees, including but not limited to, psychology, pedagogy and other social sciences.
Though on first glance it might look like she held a similar function as the other night maids, simply accompanying the princess on her daily tasks and helping her on any need she may have, she was actually dead set on making sure the dislocated princess adapts herself in the best manner possible.
As for the work hours if anyone asked, “i never slept much anyway” she would reply, getting used pretty well to following the moon princess into the night trying to help her to step into this new age where so much has changed, going to bed an hour after her and getting up usually one hour before.
As to what is like working directly with one of the princesses of Equestria, she would never say a word, as it is against the staff code of secrecy held by all who work in the castle. “She is just a big sweetie deep down, so often she will get so excited she will hug you and then blush deeply once she realized what she is doing” or “On several occasions i caught her crying in her sleep, babbling apologies and pleading forgiveness, probably dreaming about being still stuck on the moon” are things she will never tell a living soul, forever loyal to her duty and to her princess.
