Dear diary,

Hearts and Hooves day may be universally celebrated around Equestria, but every town has its own spin on the process. I’ve always found Ponyville’s to be among the most genuinely pleasant. Ponies around here get along well to begin with, and it becomes all the nicer when there’s and event going on to fuel the friendships. The inherent romance of the holiday actually takes a back seat to simply making sure everypony gets a chance to feel appreciated. Its a nice time to visit, even if you don’t have anypony in particular you’re hoping to give a card to.

Speaking of, I got Malachite one, and she’s been teeth-rottingly cute with it all day. I thought it was important for her to feel the little thrill of a secret admirer, so I picked her up something sweet and hid it in her blanket so she could wake up with it. I’m sure she knows it was me (there was no pony else around), but shes been nothing if not appreciative. Its a good feeling. Not just because my friend had a good day, but because I feel like I’m giving her what her mother wanted. A chance to experience Equestria, and all the joys and feelings that go with it.

Which, I imagine, is somewhat the opposite of what Sweetie Belle’s mother wants for HER at this stage in her life. She seems to have taken to minor infatuation with Cashmere, which has left him terrified, as he knows her sister will murder him by default. Never seen a grown stallion work so hard to flee from a little filly.

Side not: I might actually never stop laughing about this. Seriously. I’ll haunt him to his grave with it. Its ammunition for life.

The holiday brought out all of Ponyvilles natives, and gave Kite the chance to see ponies shes only vaguely heard about through wipers in my head. Some were natives I’ve met from time to time, like Lovelace (who sells some damned fine chocolate) and Belladonna (who is no doubt looking forward to getting half-off on the post-holiday damned fine chocolate), but others are ponies I only really know through reputation. Ponies like Twilight Sparkle, who caught Kite’s eye late in the evening. She wanted to know what was so significant about a little purple unicorn, and it reminded me of something similar I’d once asked my father, when I was a filly. About the nature of good and evil, and the way legends are born.
