"Blood Moon" (as I like to call her) was what I originally intended to be some kind of "death goddess" mode for Luna, like an underworld/afterlife alter ego.
That bosal thingy she has it's more than symbolic, as if she needed to keep her mouth closed to mortals, because it is believed she "drains" their souls out of the bodies when it's their time to pass away, to ensure only the corpse it's left behind (which is just a myth).
