Getting back into drawing more ponies. I have a habit of making pony heads way too big for their bodies and it's annoying me :') Anyway

Updated appearance for Sunset! I added some yellow in her hair and gave her a different, more mom-looking hair style c:


She just looks… so outdated though. It's weird to look back on old art ;-; Anyway, some notes below!

- Sunset Shimmer was born in the pony world. For most of her teenage and early adult life, she lived in the "human" world, hoping to find something better there. After being rejected by Celestia when the alicorn princess took on student Twilight, Sunset started to grow a deep bitterness in her heart. All she really wanted was to be loved by someone. Anyone.

She didn't find much in the human world- turns out, conquering a high school of already miserable students doesn't really accomplish… well, anything.


- Sunset tried everything to earn love and compassion. She forced Flash Sentry to love her through some pretty questionable methods. She was desperate, self destructive, and unstable. Her harmony wasn't in check. Thankfully, pretty lil Twilight came to save the day! Sure, Sunset hated her for so many reasons. The kid stole her crown, her rightful position as Celestia's heir, her relationship with Celestia…

But Twilight helped Sunset realize there was a way better option out there. As silly as it was, friendship really was love. With genuine, caring friends, Shimmer started to grow stronger in character.


- Sunset's separation anxiety and desperate need for attention stems from her childhood life. Her parents weren't very good at showing her they truly loved her. And in all truth, they saw her as a ticket to fame. Not only was her unicorn magic extremely advanced, the foal had a sun cutie mark. She must've been destined for great things.

They pushed her into all sorts of activities, including acting, modeling, shows- until finally Celestia took notice in the young filly and offered her a full scholarship to her school.


- Turns out, what Sunset was looking for all along was actually sitting right there. In Ponyville. In the form of yet another pretty reformed villain with purple hair. Sunset never expected her small, awkward crush on Starlight Glimmer to grow into a love-filled marriage. Plus their names even rhymed! The two of them bonded over their troubled pasts, helping each other learn and grow together.


- Sunset Shimmer, Flash, Starlight, and Sunburst are all pretty connected. For one, Sunset and Sunburst are siblings. She loves her dorky lil brother and will protect him at all costs. Starlight dated Sunburst, Sunset dated Flash, and now Flash and Sunburst are married. All four of them share a pretty close bond.


- Sunset saw Celestia as her mother figure. A replacement to the mom who felt more like her manager than anything. It hurt her to let Tia go, and it her Celestia all the same. Their reunion was both painful and heartwarming. Tia never meant to hurt her, and Sunset never meant to disappoint her.


- In the wintertime, Sunset grows a huge fluffy coat. The fur around her hooves grows excessively long, and her chest gets all poofy. It's perfect for the cold, and perfect for cuddling.


- Starlight calls Sunset "Shimmy" and that'll never change


Her old headcanon is on the drawing of her I linked above!! It's probably really outdated and I'm pretty sure I changed a few things. Either way, hope you like her updated look! Sunset's one of my favs of the show <3
