In her time, Mistmane was possibly the most beautiful Unicorn in the land. Her unrivaled visage would attract ponies and creatures far and wide to enjoy merely a glimpse of her. Those that gathered the courage to be in her company met the most selfless heart they will ever meet. Those that sparred with her faced the most elegant, controlled magicks accompanied by a swordsmanship akin to graceful dancing. The Red Mage carried herself as her masters did before her, and would pass her methods on to her protege. WHile one was never chosen due to circumstance, her status as village head didn’t make it hard for her to be presented candidates to be taken in under her wing.

Red Magicks were something that her masters studied and taught for centuries, but those teachings weren’t given a true title until black and white magicks were officially classified. The combination of methods that were once thought to be completely incompatible were discovered to be both used at once by a discipline that also used Rapiers for physical combat, which at the time was unthinkable for Unicorns. The Red Mages got the color red from the garb they wore traditionally as uniform. They were initially referred to as Grey mages, but every time they would show up in towns and cities unfamiliar with them, the group would be called Red Mages. Thus, the name stuck. Mistmane would often be the one leading the group as the head, so the title of the first Red Mage fell on to her. A title she would wear with dignity, even if she herself though the title superfluous. Strange as it seemed to her, naming her as a Red Mage gave the magick libraries an easier time to sort out who could do what since the official establishment Black and White schools of magicks have caused a renaissance of sorts. Sagacy and High Arcane magicks would cause another bout of naming confusion, but that is a tale for another day.

Her prestige did gain her a few enemies. Notably, a villager who was jealous of how much Mistmane had achieved and acquired. A curse would befall her village sapping all life and mana and channeled it all into the envious villager trying to become as beautiful and powerful as the unicorn. This curse was set while Mistmane was out on a trip, and when she returned to her village after a few weeks, the Red Mage was devastated at what she saw. There was nothing but parasitic flora and roots smothering anything they could wrap around. Any living creature visibly paled as the plants drew lifeforce and magick from them. Locating the source tas a thankfully easy task as the epicenter was easy to find from all the roots coming from one point in town. The unicorn villager who cast the curse was relishing in her own newly found power and youthful beauty. However, it was clear to Mistmane that the curse was having detrimental effects on its caster. She was very clearly becoming unhinged with how she was speaking and carrying herself. Before they could even attempt to get her to stop the curse, the villager was herself engulfed by the plants. The plants had grown out of control, and were beginning to become self sustaining. It was no longer in need a locus other than itself, rather than the caster being the catalyst.

Curses were tricky business because after a point it’s impossible to undo or even break without a trade. After breaking through the veritable cocoon of vines and roots surrounding Sable Spirit, the villager at the center of the whole ordeal, Mistmane quickly understood that the curse had yet to reach a life-for-a-life status, but if she didn’t act fast, it very well could. Her entourage didn’t even have time to talk her out of it before she began to reverse the curse placed on her beloved village. Within an instant, all of the changes and destruction wrought by the curse was undid, except for Sable’s youthful looks (but leaving her horn functionally useless). The cost was not one’s life, but in return for undoing the damage, Mistmane was left with looks befitting someone twice her age. This trade was nothing short of a win in Mistmane’s eyes. Her selfless act would cement her place as a hero of her time.

It wouldn’t be long until she would be approached by a unicorn looking to form an adventuring team, and not much longer after that they would disappear with little explanation.

In the modern era, Mistmane makes her living in Crystalheart, capital of the Crystal Empire. She tried to return to her village, but what she was were ruins of a long since abandoned ghost town. Dejected, she found herself lost in the new world and wandered until the Red Mage found herself far north in the Crystal Empire. The citizens welcomed her with open arms and eventually found herself meeting Princess Cadence after the Warriors caught wind of where she ended up after leaving. She was quickly appointed as an advisor to the Royal Family after hitting it off. Having a living legend on board skyrocketed morale in the Crystal Empire’s military. Not only that, the Unicorn had been given approval to open a new school to pass on her traditional branch of Red Magicks. These orthodox Red Mages have begun to bolster the numbers of the Crystal Empire’s army.

Bejeweled Rapier — Traditionally, Red Mages used a crystal catalyst to amplify magicks unleashed by the user. It was also detachable to allow the caster to defend themselves with their rapier, but together they would maximize the amplification. This weapon combination would eventually be overtaken with new weapon construction techniques that would combine the two into a single efficient weapon. The weapons made from this method would not only be used by Red Mages, but the Blue Mages as well. Mistmane’s weapon has an ornate custom handguard based on her master’s favorite flower, but other than that it has the crystal used by that school for generations. In the modern era, those crystals are known as Magicite, and coincidentally, refined magicite is a major export of the Crystal Empire for its unique properties compared to Magicite found globally.

Red Mage’s Hat — Before Mistmane, Red Mage’s only wore red garb to honor the blood spilt in wars passed that Red Mage’s once participated in. The hat was worn by Mistmane to blunt the stigma Sable Spirit would experience. Mistmane did not want anyone to be discriminated against since ultimately no one was hurt. Sable was branded as a witch not only from her actions but also from her fashion choices. The mage made the hat match her uniform to coordination’s sake, but she wasn’t expecting her subordinates to follow. They wore it so often it became standard, and before she could just permanently remove the hat, she disappeared. Since then it was considered part of the standard look.
