Lyra Heartstrings is a talented and scholarly young mare who is working hard to become an unguthologist. That there, is a four dollar word. Unguthology is the study of equine kind (society, diversity, development, languages, behaviors, etc.). Essentially anthropology for ponies.
She had just turned 16 when she was accepted into Canterlot Academic University's Unguthology program. There she met Bon Bon, Vinyl Scratch, and Octavia Melody (all of whom are older than she is).
Lyra is not obsessed with humans and hands and stuff but she is secretly a huge fan of the filly cartoon "Humantropolis" which has been gaining popularity in Equestria throughout multiple ages and genders, but it's still considered programming for very young female ponies.
Lyra was granted a sort of amnesty or whatever from the University when the draft rolled around. Bon Bon, Vinyl, and Octavia were not as fortunate.
