commission, illustration for “Equestrian Stories 2019”_ to the fanfic “The Proper Care and Feeding of Monsters”_. it's the wonderful fanfiction with melancholic shades. I highly recommend reading it.

*+extra: 1 — sketch page , 2 — process

before I go into the story of the drawing process, I will say one thing. I HATE DRAWING SNOW. khem. resume. deal in is, that on a whim I very quickly grabbed precisely this fanfiction. Fluttershy is one of my favorite ponies, and the story even felt warm-lamp-like with notes of sadness or even melancholy. during a full reading of fanfiction, I immediately took up a pencil and paper. there was a little cute gargoyle, Fluttershy's affection for her, a terrible picture from the book. perhaps everything in the fanfiction was set up for inspiration and, thus, a whole page of sketches of the process was collected. then I had to choose a composition. I don't know if anyone will be happy or saddened by the fact that perhaps the illustration could have been from that bit of a scene where Fluttershy is heartbroken at having to leave a small gargoyle alone in the middle of a dangerous forest.
choosing a different composition, I began to refine the sketch and selection of the palette, searching for references. in search of an image of a young gargoyle, I turned to the concepts of "Last Guardian" and photos of kittens and foxes, the style of the pony was looked at DuoCartoonists, palettes — early Disney, and wine-colored cloak taken straight from "Beauty and the Beast".
when it was time for line and coloring, I stopped. the illustration looked sparse in detail and the background seemed empty, too white and cold. so I again had to plunge into the references of icing, stuck on the bark of snow, different bushes, and so on. it was a hell of a chore and at one point I really howled that I had such a snowy illustration. but..actually, I'm glad. nature and landscapes are my strong point, so I did my best for this illustration and in the end I even enjoyed giving the snow shape and volume and weight.
now, after some time, I see that somewhere I could draw better, do a little color correction, maybe lead to even warmer colors, maybe add something else… but, you know, I still gave my best for this illustration, and I feel like it's progress. I really glad that I drew a good illustration for a good fanfiction.

Shale stepped out to regard her. She shuddered in relief. Today wasn’t the day.
“There you are,” she said. “Look, momma has rocks…” The gargoyle stared at her silently.
She gulped. “C’mon, Shale. Let’s go back inside.”
