“Next!” Coach Spitfire yelled out as a stout girl nervously approached the scale. “Last name, first name?”
“Um… Blossom, Aqua.” she smiled anxiously as the new coach then gestured towards the scale. She took off her shoes and stepped on, watching as the numbers rapidly climb up until it’s reached its stopping point.
“287. Better luck next semester.” Spitfire shrugged, “Next!”
“But, it’s only two extra pounds, ma’am.” Aqua whimpered, “I’m sure I can lose it before the first game.”
“Two pounds too many, wide load. Now get outta here!” Spitfire sneered, crossing off the girl’s name. Humiliated, Aqua covered up her flushing face and ran off the field. Paying no mind, the coach continued, “Next!”
Harsh, Rainbow Dash thought as the next potential victim stepped up. As she stood in line with the other would-be players, she got to be front and center of Spitfire living up to her name. With an aggressively raw voice and a severely strict attitude, it was enough to send even the toughest guys crying home. If Rainbow wasn’t nervous before, she was definitely getting terrified now.
“Next!”
There were so many questions racing around her head… Why was she even here?! Why wasn’t she more careful?! Why can’t she lose any weight?! Why was this lady putting everyone on the spot like this?!
“Next!”
With every step closer, she felt her knees shake beneath her 300-pound body. Maybe she can walk away from all this without anyone noticing. At her size, there was no way she was getting in the team anyway.
“Next!”
She could just feel her heart pounding.
“Next!”
Her palms were sweating.
“Next…?”
Her body clenching.
“Yo, thunder thighs, NEXT!!!”
Rainbow snapped back to reality, just realizing it was her turn. “Oh, r-right!” She smiled to hide back her dread, but even she knew it was clear as day.
As she approached the hot-headed coach, Spitfire simply greeted back with a brief glance. “Alright, you know the drill. On the scale.”
“Um… aren’t you gonna ask for my name?”
“On the scale, I said.” Spitfire snarled back in response.
Rainbow nodded before slipping off her sneakers and finally stepping onto the dread scale. She looked down and watched the number rise. She didn’t know why. She already knew how much she weighed. But maybe, by some miracle, the scale would glitch out and stop before hitting 285.
But alas, as she watched the number pass the weight limit and stop at 300.4 pounds, she shut her eyes, holding back the tears, bracing herself for the bitter sound of rejection…
“284. You’re in.”
“Wait,” her head jolted up. “What?”
“Go wait over at bleachers.”
“Wait, really?” Rainbow asked, still trying to process the emotional whiplash she just had.
“I said move it, thunder thighs, before I change my mind! Next!”
