Rainbow Dash never wanted kids. Sure, she liked kids, but she never wanted to have any of her own. Kids were fun to play with, or to teach cool tricks, she liked to be the big sister in a relationship… but to actually have to parent them? To be responsible for an entirely other person, to ensure that they grew up into a …reasonably not screwed up pony? Yeah, no thanks. Besides, she was a wonderbolt! A career that doesn't lend itself to families much; flying was her first love, how could she give that up?

So she was quite suprised to hear that Spitfire didn't have the same opinion. At all.

Or rather, she supposes that she can understand why other people do want kids, and realises that everyone has their own reasons for doing things… but on some level she always assumed that most Wonderbolts shared her viewpoint, y'know? After all, they chose the same path in life as her.

It took Spirfire getting drunk and rambling at an after-show party for Rainbow to finally realise that wasn't the case. Well, noone ever accused her of being too perceptive.

Spirfire, for her part, always knew she wanted kids. If someone where to ask her "why" she isn't sure she could put it into words, but she wants to be a mother. She loves kids, loves how inquisitive and non-judgemental they are. Her favourite part of being in the wonderbolts is actually the few times they do visits to schools. And maybe it's hard work to raise a kid, but she's never been the one to shy away from that. And yes, if that means gicing up the Wonderbolts then… so be it. She's had her glory years, she's had the fame and done the impossible. Now she wants to have a family.

She also knows that she doesn't want a relationship. She never has; neither romance nor sex has ever interested her. Though everyone in her life seemed to think that she'll change her mind one day. Well, she's bucking well into adulthood now, and she still doen't see the appeal, so who's laughing now??

…It's not her, because it turns out that having a kid without having a relationship tends to be frowned upon. Whatever, she's Spitfire, the youngest commander of the Wonderbolts in hunders of years- if she wants to have a child, she's gonna have a child and anyone who says otherwise can go buck themselves.

The problem, as she drunkedly rambles to Dash, is that you can't just clone yourself. But sperm-banks are a thing! So you'd think that be the perfect solution. But…

Alright, she's fully prepared to admit it might be paranoia. But she's seen too many fanatic ponies trying to steal a piece of her mane, or her underwear, or sending her their bathwater, or any other of the myriad of reasons they have security at their shows, that she feels she's allowed to be a bit paranoid.

The problem with using a genetic donor, is that she wouldn't know who the sire was. What if her kid wanted to meet their other parent and they turned out to be some creeper? Or somone trying to use the fact that the kid was Spitfire the Wonderbolt's? Or heck, what if she died? There's been enough cases of sperm-donors swooping in and gaining parental rights when the other parent died or otherwise lost custody (…okay, so that's usually if there's noone else to step up, but still…!). She didn't know this pony! How could she trust them to take good care of her kid? Or what if they even didn't let her parents see the kid anymore?

There's just too many bad possibilities that she can't stop worrying over them. Which she does, all the way from the bar and being shoved onto her couch by Dash and Soarin, where she promptly passes out.

It's several weeks later when Dash approaches her in her office, wanting to speak "off the record". She's given it a lot of thought, and isn't actually sure if this is appropriate or not, but she figured she could at least offer?

How to say this? She may not want kids, but she wouldn't mind helping Spirfire have kids? With the understanding that they wouldn't be Rainbow's kids. Just, look, if Spitfire is worried about someone using her kid because of her status… well, Rainbow has the exact same status. And she likes kids, even if she doesn't want any of her own. If the kid wants to get to know their other parent, then Dash wouldn't have any problem being their cool aunt or something. And if the worst were to happen, then Spitfire knows Dash — she'd never try to take the kid away from whoever Spitfire would prefer to raise them. And, and, IF something even worse were to happen, if she was the only one left they had… then, there's a reason she's loyalty.

She hasn't told anyone this before, but she has thought about what she'd do if something were to happen to her friends. Not wanting to be a parent is one thing, but if something were to happen, if her honorary nieces or nephews were left behind… you can bet your left hind leg she'd resign from active duty quicker than you could blink, and buy as many parenting-books as she could find. And Spitfire is her friend, so the same would be true for her kids.

And! And! The Very Special Spell wouldn't be a problem! Twilight already knows it so I'm sure she'd be willing to help…

..So, uh, yeah. Spitfire doesn't have to say anything, in fact she can just pretend this didn't happen if she wants. Dash just thought she'd offer?

As you might be able to guess from this story even existing, Spitfire did eventually take her up on the offer. And then immedietly got pregnant with triplets.

You see, the Very Special Spell is performed partially outside the body, with the fertilized eggs being implanted back into whoever is supposed to be pregnant -this isn't a very exact science, so the usual way this works is that you make several which you implant at the same time, hoping that one takes. This usually has to be done several times (Twilight had to try three times before Moonstone took). Spitfire is either really lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it, and three took on the first try. She decided to keep all of them -not only did she actually want to have more than one child (though she had almost given up on that dream before this, assuming she'd only get one donation), but trying to remove one of them could damage the others too, and she didn't want to have to go through more spells.

Of course, carrying triplets made people think she was ready to give birth just two-thirds into her pregnancy — and the less said about the last month the better in her opinion. She, of course, didn't escape unscathed from the teasing of her fellow Wonderbolts for this. Haha Soarin — hey, how would you like to live without teeth??

By the end there she was questioning her sanity for choosing this. But when the triplets finally were born…

…yeah, they were worth every ache.

—————

Meanwhile, Rainbow's determination to never be a mom increased tenfold as she watched the pregnancy progress.

So I teased a bit in my last upload where I showed the triplets but didn't actually say who the parents were. (Though, noone gets any points for guessing Dash was one of them =P) People had a lot of guesses, some that were really interesting, and I now feel like the actual answer is way more boring than what people had in mind ; Oh well, I still like it — I never shipped Dash x Spitfire, as I headcanon Spirfire as aro-ace, and Dash as just being too… self-centered to want a relationship, to put it in a mean way lol. But I still for some reason wanted to design what their kids would look like — I have a proto-Iris somewhere on my other computer, which was made like two years ago. I also really wanted one of the cast to not be a parent, and felt like Dash would fit that best. Hence this story. See, I can have my cake and eat it too =P

Skydancer was actually the first one I "made" — by which I mean, I like it when people use and revamp older generations into the new one, so I just stole their design from g1. Skydancer was a yellow pegasus with a rainbow mane -perfect for a Dash x Spitfire kid. I added some orange to the mane and made the green and blue smaller to better tie them to Spitfire.

Then came Iris -the proto-version of her had a light yellow body with a orange-red-purple mane, because I tried to just blend their color-schemes together. But I didn't like that version too much, and I couldn't figure out why, until I realised I just really wanted her to have an actual rainbow mane. I still felt like it fit, since the I made the rainbow colors faded in such a way that they feel "warmer"? Or at least, that's what I was going for. (Also, I have an inexplicable love for vintage-looking rainbows, with their limited palette and faded colors -it's so appealing)

Synthwave I wasn't sure I was actually gonna include. I really loved her design, but I will fully admit that I didn't make it with Spitfire in mind -I just wanted a pony based around Synthwave iconography. But she would make a nice contrast to the other two. After hemming and hawing I decided to keep her, with the reasoning that she takes after Dash a lot and could have inherited some recessive stuff from Spitfire's parents. Let's go with that.

Ok, so maybe they take after Dash more than Spitfire. Still, I wanted them to have rainbow manes! This is like the only designs where a rainbow mane is warranted and I wanted to use it. At least a tried to make the rest of the designs (aside from Synthwave lol) correspond to Spitfire more than Dash, so I think they are somewhat reasonable hypothetical Dash x Spitfire kids. I mean, some people did guess correctly, right? (Or maube that's just the infinite monkeys at a typewriter effect =P)

Eh, whatever, I still really like them :D

Oh, and in my last one I said that Iridescence Flare and Skydancer (Prism Raptor)'s names where a hint to their other parent. It's really far fetched but, Spitfire's mom's name is "Stormy Flare" and a "Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor" is a fighter aircraft …y'know, like the Supermarine Spitfire is?
