Background/Personality

Squirrel was a preemie foal. She was born two months earlier than expected, which started the medical journey to nurse her back to health. The birth itself wasn't bad at all- Pinkie doesn't remember feeling anything, which is maybe due to how small Squirrel was at that premature stage. She was eventually healthy enough to leave the nursery, and her spots started to develop shortly after she was taken home. It was a coat pattern that hadn't been observed in the Pie family for almost 8 generations.

She's the oldest of the Mane 6's children and one of the shortest (shorter than Pinkie herself), but still taller than her younger sis Kie. Squirrel's actually pretty far apart in age from the rest of the Mane 6's children, by about 10-15 years. She's already a teenager by the time her next siblings are born, but she loves them regardless.

She is most definitely the daughter of her parents, personality speaking. She can actually be pretty overwhelming- her energy never runs out, as if she's always having a sugar rush. She's an optimistic, annoyingly happy, and constantly enthusiastic pony. Despite her outgoing personality, many ponies find it far too tiring to be her friend. She doesn't really realize, though, too caught up in her joy to notice. Maybe that's a good thing.

She's a family pony, loves doing huge gatherings between her numerous relatives, and babysits her younger cousins whenever she has the chance.


Relationships

Despite being a little too enthusiastic, Squirrel does have some friends who've stuck around. She practically grew up beside the Cake twins (who are basically her extended siblings), and Pinkie would regularly drop her off at Cadence's to spend the night with Flurry Heart.

Through being Twilight's squire, she's gotta move around quite a lot… which means she gets to meet pretty much everyone, everywhere. Squirrel's known all the way through Canterlot to the Dragonlands and beyond. She acts as a student to Twilight, but the rest of the Mane 6 sometimes rely on her to complete certain tasks. She never really gets a break, but loves her job regardless. She and Twilight don't exactly have a tight, mother-daughter sort of bond. It's more of a teacher-student thing, but they're definitely comfortable around each other.

Squirrel's spoken to Cassie, Twilight's daughter, here and there, being Twilight's squire and all. They are pretty far apart in age, so it's not like they're good buddies or anything. Despite being connected to Twilight, Squirrel spends most of her time away from Twi's castle completing her work.

Squirrel's close to both of her parents, but leans more to Cheese Sandwich. He often took her along on party trips and they'd spend countless nights together baking, partying, and just messing around. Of course, she loves Pinkie too, but Cheese just really understands her.

Flurry Heart's sassy, dismissive personality compliments Squirrel's hyper one rather well, surprisingly. The two are good buddies, but Flurry would never dare call Squirrel her best friend, oh no. The only person who really loves and appreciates her? Pfft, no way. Whenever Squirrel has free time, she visits her buddy down in the Crystal Empire.

Squirrel's super close to Aunt Maud. She calls her when she needs advice, and they know how to cheer each other up.

Since she's much older than the rest of the kiddos, she grew up being the babysitter. The cool one who let you eat cake and whipped cream for dinner! All the kids pretty much loved her, but they didn't interact as much when they got older.


Special

- Secretly, Squirrel is very aware that no one actually really likes her. She's extremely conscious of that, and it makes her feel insecure. She keeps the smile on, though, because a smile can never hurt. …Right?

- Squirrel is super floof and very thicc. Eating cupcakes and candy all day long growing up made her a bit chubby, but she's comfortable with her body image and doesn't mind it at all!

- Squirrel's nickname came out of nowhere, but practically everyone calls her by it. Some ponies don't even know that her real name is Cupcake! Pinkie claims the nickname came from Squirrel's job as a squire, and that somehow "Squirrel" came out of the word "Squire." Cheese Sandwich completely shuts down that preposterous idea- he insists that it came from her childhood obsession with squirrels.

- Squirrel's middle name is Saffron, after Pinkie's good friend Saffron Masala!

- Despite its childish origin, Squirrel loves her nickname. At the same time, though, maybe its tie to childish things unconsciously makes her feel like everyone thinks she's immature, just "another kid"

- Squirrel shockingly isn't really good at throwing parties… at all. Kinda weird for the daughter of two famous party ponies. They always turn out disappointing- something has always gone wrong every time she's planned a party. Her talents shine best when she bakes. Squirrel might be annoying but her baking will make absolutely anyone drool

- Most of her earth pony magic goes into her baking, similar to how Applejack's earth pony magic goes into her apple harvesting. It makes the food taste magical and fresh.

- She might not be the best party coordinator, but she still likes other pony's parties. They're fun!

Updated Squirrel's design! Really only changed her hair (and added a cutie mark. Might change the frosting color to blue to match her eyes but we'll see). She's not as skinny as before since she no longer has unicorn genes, so she's short too. Said this on her old ref so I'll say it here too: She's the oldest of all the Mane 6's kids, but the third oldest of all the NextGen kids. Panther is the oldest, then Flurry Heart, then her.
