I made the effort to try something different this time: instead of digitally painting underneath any lines I had created, I decided to paint over and on top of said lines. Alas, I recognize completely that I have a long way to go to make make it look convincingly lifelike, but I suspect that's just something that takes time and practice to eventually get good at.
