Ray is a short, yellow dragon I meant to introduce a long time ago. But as luck would have it, when I was in the process of sketching him out for an art piece, Sunset Shimmer acquired a pet named Ray, also yellow. Ray the dragon went back to the drawing board, but I eventually decided to just roll with it and and adapt the lizard's design into my dragon.
Ray is the hopelessly optimistic, fun-loving and adventurous grandfather of Smolder and Garble. He comes from an island where dragon naming conventions are rather strange: they are all named after fish. Hairy eyebrows are the trademark feature of these dragons.
Ray is an unusually friendly dragon towards all creatures and is very open-minded. Much to his daughter Caldera's chagrin, he sometimes undermines her authority so his grandchildren can have fun. Due to Ray being ridiculously lucky and that luck rubbing off on those around him, the dangerous situations Smolder and Garble subsequently get themselves into resolve themselves on their own.
Ray forms an unlikely friendship with Torch, who he meets at a young age. Their dynamic is somewhere between that of Shaun & Ed (Shaun of the Dead) and Tulio & Miguel (The Road to El Dorado). Like Torch, Ray has a strong sense of justice. Ray — who can be dim-witted and impulsive — looks up to Torch, the more responsible between the two. Ray was also one of the only dragons to support Torch during the early centuries of his reign.
Ray's embarrassing and airheaded comments, as well as his tendency to dive head-first into trouble, are a source of great frustration for Torch, who has little tolerance for these things. The fact that Ray's unbelievable luck prevents his actions from having lasting consequences most times — thus preventing him from learning to be more prudent, only exacerbates this frustration. Despite having radically different personalities the two deeply care about each other and share an almost brotherly bond.
