Bio: Azuritina Crystallina Diane Pie (better known as Azurite, or, simply, Zuri) is the sole daughter of Mud Briar and Dr. Maud Pie. She is the oldest of the five Pie cousins, and was born quietly in Maud's grotto amidst a gentle thunderstorm. The filly hardly cried during her subsequent arrival, and has said perhaps twenty whole sentences since. Well, okay, perhaps that's an exaggeration, but nevertheless, its more common to see a Breezie than to hear Azurite speak. Eerily quiet, Azurite has kept to herself a good majority of her young life. She would much rather keep to the secluded, peaceful wonders of her grotto home, or the glens of the Everfree, armed with her satchel full of stones, chisels, and maybe a book. Considered the perfect addition to one of Ponyville's most…interesting residents, ponies find themselves often wondering about the mysterious blue filly. She emanates her…intriguing parents so perfectly, sometimes its a little scary how the apple didn't seem to fall from the tree at all.
Slightly less rare than hearing her voice, but still a spectacle to behold, is seeing Azurite smile. Most often, she wears a slightly grumpy expression that may slightly fluctuate between annoyance and exasperation. Of course, having an-honest-to-goodness scientist for a mother, sometimes the sheer ignorance some ponies can display can make her skin crawl. One quirk of a brow over one stormy eye is more than enough to make anypony suddenly shut their muzzle. However, she's not completely judgmental all of the time. Azurite would rather sit back and listen when in company, and observe. Observe small inflections in conversation, a slight look, a smile. More than once, a pony who had shrugged off a mention of a failed test they'd worked rather hard on suddenly found one of Pinkie Pie's newest creations sitting on their doorstep. They never pick up on the fact that its Azurite, but the smiles she's able to produce are worth it.
However, her talents lie more towards the traditional Pie vein. This gal has quite a knack for stone sculpting, and has spent countless hours delicately chiseling away at a block of marble, or an amethyst geode, to create insanely-detailed statues that seem to be portraits their inspirations, frozen in time. Like her Ma, she is not lacking in the muscular department. This gives her an advantage in tackling larger pieces, and can complete commissions in record time. She becomes quite focused on her work, and it can prove difficult to gain her attention once she's reached "the zone." Her visitors often find themselves entranced by her strokes with one chisel, then small chips against one corner with another. Then, suddenly, there's a smiling fox sitting there made out of a big block of citrine. She never addresses them, so Azurite never seems to mind her visitors…
Relationships:
Despite her grumpy demeanor, Azurite is not without friends. She has been spotted at more than one RazorWingz concert, ever-so-slightly bobbing her head in time to the music. Jupiter Sky once provided her the telescope she needed to be able to sculpt a near-perfect replica of the moon out of smoky quartz (while now sits proudly in Princess Luna's quarters). She has more than once shown her appreciation for Ophelia Moon's work, and once brought her an injured macaw that had somehow ended up in her grotto home. However, her (seemingly) best friend remains Juniper Berry, the near-blind daughter of the famous Applejack (and family friend). While the two had observed each other from afar during "extended family meetup parties" that her aunt hosted, they officially met when Juniper accidentally encountered Azurite when scrounging for new herbs along the fringes of the Everfree. She picks up the sound of the blue mare tapping away at a big rock, and sees the rock-loving filly sitting next to a seemingly-huge black boulder. She seemed to be chipping at it with some sort of tool to create a certain shape. Juniper could only sit there, listening as the tapping changed in tone and speed.
"Its beautiful." Juniper commented. Azurite continued on, not acknowledging the blonde mare. She lowered her pale eyes. "I wish I could tell what it is."
That's when Azurite finally looked over her shoulder, brow quirked in that familiar scowl — until she finally got a proper look at the other girl. She'd never been informed that the farm filly was blind. She'd always heard the murmurings amongst the adults about Applejack's little daughter that was making huge improvements, and was swiftly catching up with her peers. From that day in the forest, the two just kinda…never grew apart. Juniper is often accompanied by Azurite, and it was the blue filly that helped her navigate to the San Palamino Canyons to help her save her cousin Chrysanthemum. While she doesn't exactly articulate it, Azurite enjoys Juniper's non-judgmental company. Her enthusiasm for life sometimes provides inspiration for Azurite's work. It can get slightly grating at times, but Azurite finds solace in Juniper's presence.
As any Pie, she is quite close to the rest of her family. She loves her parents, and shares their love in all things rock and wood. There were times in which Azurite would end up spending a few months with only one parents, as the other would head off to do research for their latest paper and/or book. She would listen raptly to Mud's lectures on the latest discovery of the oldest petrified Quercus prinus found this side the Crystal Empire. He is always encouraging of her talents, even if its just a pat on the head. She's very close with Maud, and shares her love of the rocks that support their world. Her mother understands her more than anypony, and is always willing to listen when she's needed. She knows what its like when other ponies think you're weird and you don't have a lot of friends. She often accompanies her mother on her expeditions. In fact, Azurite was the first of the Athenaverse gang to travel to the Changeling Kingdom.
While she doesn't quite show it on the outside, Azurite adores her cousins — especially Connie and C.C. She tolerates being the taste-tester for all of their wacky, overly sweet creations. She is a common visitor to Sugarcube Corner, and is quite fond of her Aunt Pinkie. She secretly shares her mission to make down ponies feel just that little bit better, and Pinkie Pie often provides the cupcakes to help her do so. She keeps Azurite's secret (in exchange for a few hugs). She does enjoy the "family dinners" her aunt hosts, listening to the newest fossil Sandstone finds, and Iron Forge always insists on checking the health of her shoes. Sometimes, even, the Twins' antics can coax a smile out of her.
