Here is the origin of "Nightmare Moon"fav.me/ddxhird and her true form Somnum, and in here fav.me/ddt35ac i said that Nightmare Moon took Stygian as her "son", why? because of i was inspired by thia bit from the wikia 'According to Applejack, when Nightmare Moon was banished to the moon, traces of her dark magic stayed behind. When night falls on the Castle of the Two Sisters, that dark magic takes the form of the Pony of Shadows."

So, Nightmare Moon/ Somnum traces of magic resulted in a being weaker than her, who couldn't fully possess the body of it's vessel (like NMM does, since here she is just Luna's body controlled by Somnum) instead they form some kind of "bond" with the vessel in which both of them control the body. Afterbeign exiled Stygian found the entity, who he nicknamed Styx, and bonded with him, when Styx/Pony of shadows is in control, his eyes turn white.

Oh btw Stygian is aged up in this AU, in my HC he is 18, but here he is 25.
