Brilliant Quartz is Flurry Heart's brother and the youngest son of Shining Armor and Princess Cadance. Whereas Flurry Heart is very aware of her status and privilege as the child of royalty and does her best to not seem full of herself about it, Quartz is very much the opposite. He places a lot of value on his royal status and thus views himself quite highly, taking most of the advantages he has for granted and firmly believing that he deserves everything he has. Quartz is very self-conscious about the fact that he's a unicorn rather than an alicorn like his sister and tends to overcompensate by showing off his magical abilities to anyone who will listen. More than anything, anyone who really knows him would agree that he needs to learn humility.

Brilliant Quartz has a good relationship with his parents — who tend to dote on him as the "baby" of the family — but his relationship with his sister is fairly strained and he doesn't have any real friends. He'd never admit it, but the royal guard Apollo is probably the only pony who he feels a connection to. Even so, although Apollo tries to be friendly with Quartz, Quartz does his best to piss off the other stallion by being snarky/deliberately obtuse in all their interactions, keeping Apollo (and everyone else) at arm's length. He masks his insecurities by putting up a façade of arrogance and a devil-may-care attitude — deep down, he fears that if ponies would hate him if they knew his true self.
