How disappointed Spike was when initially he discovered his age and size means that he cannot qualify to join the dragon corps; an army of dragons formed by Celestia and led by the twins Jakiro in their battle against chaos. But being Spike, no one can get in his way. Instead he decided to follow Grand Magus Twilight into battle and together, slowly but steadily the duo's reputation grew as they both participate and win battles after battles. A fact that worms its way into the ranks of the dragon corps as they began to develop respect for the bravery of this young dragon.

That is until one fateful day. In his berserk, Spike once again unwittingly transformed into his elder dragon form feared by many of his allies — which resulted in the destruction of both sides. As he mentally broke down, the dragon "Crackle" approached him, but not to comfort him. Instead he challenged Spike to a "battle". Or is it? Turns out that Crackle decided to teach Spike the way of the dragon, hissing to him advice after advice with every move he made. Spike is a quick learner, and the battle between the two turns into a close death defying dance as Spike slowly absorbed all that Crackle taught him becoming more fiercer and confident with every move as he begins to accept his inner dragon, for knowing one's self is the most crucial part in the heat of battle. Then comes the final step of the waltz, where Spike finally transformed again into his elder dragon, and this time with himself at control, he pinned Crackle to the ground.
