"What's a cute thing like you doing out here all alone?"
Pinkie whirled around, startled. Discord was framed in the light from the balcony doors, the sequins on his ostentatious suit trimmings gleaming faintly in the shadows. Music from the ballroom streamed into the night, now unrestrained by the heavy french doors to the inner palace.
"I figured you'd be in there with your /friends/" he rolled the word around his tongue like it left a bad taste in his mouth, "celebrating widdle twiwight's big day?" He slid in beside the pink mare perched on the handrail of the veranda, watching the shadows from the castle twirl across the floor. "I thought you were the paramount party pony?"
"weeeellll…" Pinkie sucked in breath through her grimace, "Last time I cut loose at a big ball-fancy-dancy thing it didnt go so well." She shrugged, fingering at a bit of lace on her elaborate coronation dress. Discord leaned in slightly, an eyebrow raising above his bemused grin.
"Oh /do/ tell."
"Eh…I dont wanna go into too many details, but…"
Discord's other eyebrow achieved elevation. His ears perked forward. "buuut?" he prompted.
"well, long story short we maybe sorta-kinda brought the grand galloping gala to a crashing, bashing, rabble-rousing disaster!"
Discord gaffawed, long tail lashing back and forth. "oh you have GOT to tell me all the sorted details!"
~hours later
"you've got to be kidding me!? FLUTTERSHY did all that? oh this is priceless!!" Discord was bent double in uncontrolled laughter, his fist pounding against the rail he was leaning on. "'You Will Love Me!' Oh my, oh my, oh Pinkie you're KILLING me!" Pinkie was also deep into a fit of giggles, Discord's exaggerated reactions to her story provoking her own mirth.
Suddenly, they heard a loud electronic screech come from the ballroom. Somepony was trying to adjust the microphone and instead got an earful of harsh feedback that punished everyone within a half mile of the palace. Pinkie and Discord nearly fell off the balcony in alarm.
"Oh for Celestia's sake- oh that's better," squawked the speaker system, "The Princess Twilight Sparkle wishes to thank everypony for coming tonight and for your continued support for her in her new royal position. However, even alicorns need their sleep and it is my duty to inform you that this will be the last song of the evening. thank you all again for coming and on behalf of the entire palace staff we wish you a good night and a safe journey home!"
Pinkie Pie and Discord blinked at one another, the air suddenly heavy and the night suddenly grown cold. Pinkie coughed.
"wow, I didn't realize we'd been out here that long." She chirped.
"Well, you know what they say," Discord chuckled.
"Time flies when you're having fun." they finished in unison. Pinkie felt her cheeks warm up, and felt an odd fluttering in her belly. She felt as if her pinkie-sense was trying to tell her something, but this was a combination she'd never felt before. She had an opportunity to feel it again when discord gave her a warm, toothy grin.
"Shall we away, M'lady?" he droned theatrically, offering her his hand. It was all pinkie could do not to stare at it.
"Oh come on, now, it's not going to bite." Discord rolled his eyes. Pinkie gave him a wan little smile before taking his hand. Suddenly Discord's fingers closed and he whirled her around into an elaborate dip. His wings flared out for added drama, acting as a counterweight to their inertia. Pinkie couldn't help the surprised squeak that escaped her lips.
"You know, I was just thinking. It'd be a real shame to come to a ball and not have at least one little dance before you go. And AS it IS the very last dance of the evening-" he trailed off, cocking his head in an inviting smile.
Pinkie Pie felt she was really earning her name now, as the blush on her cheeks deepened. There was something in that predatory grin, the sparkle in his ruby-red eyes and the silly caterpillar fluff of his eyebrows that made Pinkie feel as tongue-tied and stammer-y as Fluttershy. She could feel the pinpricks of his claws against her back where he was holding her against him. He'd pulled her close enough that the wisps of his beard were starting to tickle her chin. It wasn't until Pinkie began to feel her eyes water that she realized she hadn't blinked for quite some time.
She swallowed, and shot him a face-splitting grin of her own. "Think you can keep up with me, old man?"
Discord's eyes went wide, and this time, his smile was of genuine delight.
