Luna. Probably one of THE best characters of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
This is a tribute to Princess Luna. The sister that was neglected by those that reveled in the daylight. Her loneliness overcame her and her frustration grew into hatred to the point to where she was no longer recognizable as who she once was, even to herself! She called herself Nightmare Moon.. A new name for the new princess. Through each lonely night she had nothing to do but dwell on her pain until she was eventually banished for acting on it. In the series, and in an uncharacteristic SHOWING of friendship, the heroes blasted Luna with the poor man's Care Bear Stare. I guess it was a kind of "X-treme intervention" and they seemed to have "broken the spell", so to speak.
While it's a sensational approach (it IS a cartoon afterall), from my point of view, Luna knew someone cared, and I believe that's what really happened. She changed back not because they beat the crap out of her with a rainbow. It was because everyone had fought her, as she expected. They played her games and fed her mislead intentions. But then they stopped doing that altogether and instead showed her what friends can do for each other. She was strong in her convictions as the persona of Nightmare Moon until she witnessed what friendship actually looked like. Twilight's retelling of what happened on their journey, seeing that others could sacrifice for each other.. To me that's what broke the spell. Luna allowed the magic to happen, that's when she finally believed that the magic, Friendship, applied to her as well.
After one thousand years Luna finally felt the warmth of daylight again and realized she actually belonged at her sister's side the entire time. A happy ending to a long, bitter tale.
