Sweetie Belle wasn't supposed to be awake, but there was no way that anyone could sleep through the shouts, the yells, and the loud crashes from downstairs. She had been excited at first; the loud noises meant her parents were here in Rarity's Boutique. She hadn't seen them in months, and she couldn't wait to get downstairs to hug her mother.

Slowly, as quietly as she could, Sweetie gently lifted herself out of her bed. Her bare feet touched the cold floor, and she shivered a little. From downstairs, she could hear Rarity saying something, only to be interrupted by her mother Cookie Crumbles. Normally, she was afraid of the cloaking darkness that filled the hallway at night, but tonight she tiptoed through it without a second thought. She reached the stairs, and now she made all her movements deliberate and cautious. One stair creaked under her foot, and she froze, expecting to be caught. Luckily, nobody seemed to hear, and she was able to continue. At the bottom of the stairs and around the corner was the living room where Sweetie could hear her mother speaking.

The young girl was about to run into the living room, throw herself into her mother's arms, and tell her how much she missed her, but suddenly her mother's voice rang out.

"You ungrateful little brat!"

Sweetie stopped, cupping her hand over her mouth in surprise as her mother called Rarity a few more wicked things.

"After everything your father and I have done for you"

"What you've done for me?!" Rarity cut her off with a disbelieving tone, "All that you've done for me is ignore every play I ever designed costumes for and ignore every single thing I was ever proud of unless it somehow benefited you!"

"Don't you dare talk to your parents that way," Cookie said threateningly, "Your father and I have
"

"You've what?!" Rarity shouted, thrusting a hoof at where her father lie on the couch, "Dad's passed out drunk and you're standing here like… like this is normal! Like this is okay! This isn't something that everyone else does! I was unlucky enough to get you for parents! I ask you for one little thing, and you"

"You have to learn to solve your own problems, Rarity!" Cookie shrieked, drowning out her daughter's voice, "You wanted to be a designer, and we fully supported you! Who paid for this Boutique? Who entered financial debt just to give their daughter what she wanted?!"

"And who paid you back, in full, in her first month?!" Rarity countered, "Who pulled you out of debt because Dad was always too drunk to do it himself?!"

Overcome with rage, Rarity turned away from her mother and, seething with anger and hatred, grabbed an endtable and threw it onto its side with a violent scream. A lamp tumbled off the endtable onto the floor and shattered. Rarity stomped over to her mother and thrust a thin finger in her face.

"I've been solving your little problem for years! Maybe, for just once in your life, you could solve one of mine!"

"Sweetie Belle couldn't come with us
" Cookie tried to argue.

"No! You dump her here and then run off to tour some different country!"

"P-Problem…?" Sweetie whispered to herself, her voice cracking as her eyes began to well up with tears, "I-I'm… I'm just a… a p-problem…?"

Sitting in the shadowy darkness in the hallway outside of the living room, leaning against the wall, Sweetie buried her face in her hands and began to quietly cry as her mother and sister raged on. She hadn't cried since she had moved in with her big sis, and she tried keeping her sobs as soundless as possible so nobody would hear.

…and then Rarity noticed the doll, sitting so innocently in the hallway. Her eyes widened; that wasn't there a minute ago. Ignoring her still-shouting mother, Rarity slowly made her way toward the hallway, hoping that Sweetie Belle wasn't there, praying that her younger sister hadn't heard what she just said, and then she looked around the corner into the hall.
