This was an INCREDIBLE amount of effort to achieve. To match the style of Minty Roots backgrounds, I used 3dsmax and assigned a specific color to each poloygon. Thats right, there is no lighting or toon surface shader on any of this. I literally punched RBG values in a giant excel spreadsheet to color the building.

We didn't know if the shot was going to look right until we had the computer render the scene for 30 minutes. If a color was off or a pony wasn't properly placed, I had to tweak and re-render the entire thing.

I'm sure there is a better way to achieve this effect, but that's the method I came up with. The shot was completed in 3 days.

All the tiles, lights, windows, and beams are procedural generated.

My animation team made various sprite cards of ponies to populate the scene.
We offset the height of the pony legs to match the pallax angle of the camera. It only works from this angle, if the camera was a scale foot higher or lower the illusion would have been thrown off.
