The streets of Canterlot were bustling with activity — Princess Celestia and her husband Discord had recently welcomed a new addition to their family, and thus the whole town was celebrating.The main event had been organized by party pony Cheese Sandwich, chosen by Discord himself. The Mane Six and Spike were up in Canterlot as well, after being personally invited by the royal family. A few had broken off into small groups to enjoy the festivities.

Pinkie Pie was having a wonderful time! Cheese had really outdone himself. She bounced along the streets with her young son Caramel, singing and pulling festive balloons and favors from nowhere. It wasn't long before she amassed a small herd of foals following her around the streets, cheering and laughing with each other.

Yet there was one who hung back, staring in awe at the mare as she played with the children. She seemed so kind, and wonderful. The little colt was drawn to Pinkie's cheerful attitude like a magnet. For the rest of the day, long after the other kids left on their own, he continued to follow her around like a lost puppy.

Pinkie looked back at the colt who was still curious about her. All the other foals had returned to their parents or families. Where was his?


Pinkie Pie later learns that Gumball is an orphan colt, and, after discussing it with her wife Skystar, they decide to adopt him as their son. As an adult, Gumball works at the candy bar of Sugarcube Corner.
