Silver Shield led Rainbow Dash into his room, he had something important to tell her and he wanted to say it in the privacy of somewhere he felt comfortable. “So what's this big secret about kiddo? Is something wrong?” Dash asked, sitting down on the floor across from Silver Shield.
“I um, I uh-.” Silver stuttered as he struggled to find the words, everything he had rehearsed to say was gone, he was nearly frozen with fear.
Dash noticed that Silver’s hooves were trembling, “Silver, please. Talk to me.” she urged softly.
Silver sucked in a shaky breath, held it for a moment, then exhaled it in a slow puff. Dash watched intently, patient just for her son. Silver looked her in the eyes when he said it. It was quick and almost painless, like pulling off a band-aid.
“I’m gay.”
There was a pause, as if time had stopped just for a second or two.
Dash looked down for a moment, trying to process what she had just heard. Dash stared down for awhile, until she heard a sniff, and then another. Dash looked up to find that Silver was obviously trying to hold back tears, biting his lip hard as he stared down at the ground, hooves trembling, Silver was terrified.
Within a few seconds Dash had her arms wrapped tightly around her son and Silver was sobbing into his mother’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry mom, I’m sorry.” Silver mumbled through tears. Dash pushed him away to hold her hooves sternly on his shoulders, “No. Don't you dare apologize.” Dash snapped, her voice suddenly shaky although stern at the same time.
Silver tried to turn his face away but Dash stopped him with a gentle hoof.
“Being gay is nothing to be ashamed of Silver, because you’re still you.”
Silver let out a long breath he didn't know he had been holding, his shoulders slumped as he suddenly felt a weight drop from his chest. It was like Silver had just taken his first breath in years, yet exhaled every last drop of oxygen in his lungs at the same time.
“C’mere.” Dash said, pulling Silver into a tight hug. Silver hugged her back, clapping a hoof on her back in his enthusiasm.
Everything was going to be okay, Silver’s mom accepted him as he was without hesitation and he could finally be the version of himself he had been holding back for so many years. Everything was finally going to be okay.
He could finally exhale.

Silver Shield is gay and proud of it, but it didn't start out that way. When Silver was around 16 or so, he came out to his parents, first Rainbow Dash then Dumbbell (mainly because he was terrified of what his dad would say). When Silver came out to Dash, he was expecting a much harsher reaction than the worried maternal hug he got as soon as tears started to fall. Dash explained to Silver that being gay was nothing to be ashamed of and that the majority of her best friends were also in same-sex relationships, after this Silver was much more confident that his dad would have a good reaction as well, which luckily he did.
