Spikes Quest — Chapter 6: [131]
Well good morning, sleepyhead! Jitte said as Spike entered the room, I was wondering when youd be down. Your two friends already came by. You hungry? I can whip you up something in a jiffy. He leaned against his counter waiting for a reply.
Um Spike didnt know what to ask for. S-surprise me? Spike tentatively asked, not sure what to expect.
Flapjacks it is! Jitte gave a cheerful smile as he produced a bowl from somewhere and began pouring a viscous tan fluid out of it onto a flat counter. The batter immediately began spitting and bubbling upon touching the stone surface, Spike figured it was a stove that was being heated by some means he couldnt see from his perspective.
Spike watched as Jitte worked, trying to figure out what to talk about. He had a bunch of questions still: what was this place, who were these dragons; but he decided small talk would be better than grilling the dragon cooking breakfast. So you like cooking? That doesnt seem very dragon-y. I remember I used to get made fun of for doing it.
Well, Im not your usual dragon, Jitte said in a playful way, I used to get teased as well, especially by Finos, though he changed his attitude real quick. Once you get a taste of the good life, its hard to go back to living like uncivilized beasts. Its easy to forget how important some tasks are. Besides, its not like theres anything wrong with being a chef.
Finos? The scary orange guard dragon?
The one and the same.
Spike was amused that the thought of that scary guard dragon whining because his food tasted bad, but after a moment Spike remembered something. How many dragons live here? Spike asked, I saw a lot of rooms but Ive only seen 5 living here, and I bet theres probably more.
Well, we havent exactly dug to far deep into the mountain, Jitte explained, Weve only just recently started converting this mountain into a place to live. So far right now theres me, Kit, Fin, Lit, Y, and Barry, at least at the moment. We have several dragons come and go throughout the year, but most of the others are out visiting the southern isles or something; it IS the hot season, after all. We stayed behind to look after the place, make sure it stays kept up with.
Ive heard from the other guys that the dragon council meets here, you wouldnt happen to be one of them would you? Spike asked, thinking back to the story that Sharp told about dragons disappearing and the green smoke from Spiral Mountain. What exactly is the council?
Me? Nah, that would be Kit, shes our representative in the council. Jitte explained away frying up another flapjack, The council meets here, in that cool looking dome at the top of the mountain, for as long as I can remember. Heck the name is a weird anagram for rendezvous, shows how creative the dragon who came up with it was. Anyway, the council meets at the start of every season, though its possible to summon a meeting, if what Kit tells me is important.
So Kitoith really believes me about the diamond dogs? Spike asked, surprised.
Its not that she believes you, Jitte explained, Its just we literally have no other lead. Shes been wary about the increased activity on the Spiral Mountain peak, its not a place most ground bound dragons go. Jitte replied thinking back to events, Its quite the trek for those of us without wings. Kit was suspicious when the Shearwing clan didnt show up for the summer gathering.
Shearwing clan?
Duh, pony dragon, Jitte said as he realized that Spike didnt know a lick about dragons, The council its made up of representatives from the different dragon clans. Kits been trying to establish some sort of unified nation, but dragons dont exactly like working together. Heck most dragons never join a clan. Every clans got its different rules and traditions, so this loose council thing theyve got going seems to be as good as it can get. Jitte took the plate of flapjacks he had just finished stacking, and handed it to Spike. Anyway, Kit would be better at answering your questions better than I would, unless you wanted tips on making the perfect flapjack. Let me go find her for you, while you eat up.
Thanks Jitte, Spike said as he took the rather large plate of flapjacks, something more suited for an adult dragon than a teen dragon like him. He took a seat at the slab table in the dining room as Jitte left the room, and quickly dug in. The sapphires gave a nice crunch to the chewy flapjack, smothered with bluish syrup. It was delicious, Spike decided he definitely needed to ask about making the perfect flapjack.
