ok, so i have a little theory about g5. this isn't canon to my nextgen (as twilight never became the sole ruler of equestria in my au) — its just more of a lil theory rattling around in my head that i felt like drawing — MAJOR G5 SPOILERS AHEAD!

After Twilight takes to the throne, everything in Equestria seem…well, better than ever! She was a fair, compassionate leader, who worked tirelessly to maintain a peace between ponies, and non pony species alike. She lived up to the reputation and standard that Celestia had set before her, and for the most part, the future looked bright.

However, as each of the mane six passed on, Twilight's compassionate nature seemed to dissipate. She grew cold and distant, a shell of her former self consumed by her grief of their passing. She began to change, as the large amounts of magic in her body began to feed upon her grief (simmilar to nightmare moon) — both mentally, but also physically, as her coat loses it's colour and the magic takes more and more of a hold over her.

She's incredibly aware as the process begins to happen. She tries to resist it, ignores her grief, ignores the changes happening to her body. Faced with emotions and changes she can't control, she focused on what or, well, who, she still can. She splits the pony races up, keeping everyone in line and where they should be to an almost dictatorship level. She believes this is for their own good, and that friendship ("magic") is the cause of all her suffering and grief, so in her own way she is sparing them.

This all leads up to her removing all magic itself, before vanishing without a trace, leaving the 3 seperated pony races to govern for themselves.

No one really knows where Twilight went, keeping herself far from any of the pony civilizations — but she mysteriously reappears once Sunny and her friends bring the magic back, and reunites the pony races, undoing the hard work Twilight had done to keep things in order. She's there to find out who did this, and uh… idk destroy them probably.

i dont think this will happen in the show, mostly because its kinda… depressing, for what's mostly a happy show — but i just really like the idea that Equestria being split up is because of twilight, not in spite of.

and also shout out to owlcoholik and HorseCrimes for a lot of help with this as well!! i was mostly just like "evil twilight make pony races split" and they helped to refine the idea a bit more lmao.
