Anonymous asked:What inspires you?
hmm, that’s always a hard thing to put into words! bear with me, I’ll try.
for me, my inspiration mostly comes from things that other people make. not just in the sense of drawing fanart (though there’s a lot of that too) but in seeing shapes that they use, the way they color things, stuff like that…sometimes it just hits me like “oh, I wanna do something like that!”
obviously I don’t mean that I just copy other artists – sometimes I do try to closely imitate other styles as an exercise, but that’s not what I’m talking about here. it’s more like…trying to capture the feeling I get from someone else’s art, or taking one thing that I like about what they’ve done and doing my own thing with it. and I keep it pretty loose, so it usually evolves way past that first point of inspiration anyway, and it’s hard to tell how it came out of the original inspiration to begin with.
like…this is recent enough that I can remember what started it: the other day I saw a really cute drawing of a turtle, where the artist had colored the lines in a way that made it look really soft and ambient and peaceful. and that made me want to draw something that had the same kind of feeling! for some reason I decided that meant Starcatcher, idk I guess I just associate her character with those kinds of feelings? and I did this:
I didn’t initially post it because it’s not particularly interesting, as drawings go, and I was also thinking about coloring it maybe with a similar line treatment later? but anyway that’s what I was going for, and that’s where it came from! hopefully that makes…some amount of sense. :U
(alternately: sometimes it’s convenience! Moonstuck’s desaturated colors came from me thinking greys would be faster to do, and it turned into a weirdly iconic style. I also did some paintings for class that my teacher called “psychologically interesting”, because they were all of people turned away from the viewer, constricted to the edge of the canvas, surrounded by blank dark backgrounds…which was all because that meant I didn’t have to paint as much. it doesn’t count as being lazy if you make a style out of it!)
(alternately alternately: Inconvenient Trixie came to me in a dream. sometimes divine prophecy is the only explanation.)
#tl;dr there was a cute turtle
