In a self-sacrificing attempt to defeat Discord, Shooting Star did what no other pony had done before: reach mach one—the kind of speed you could only achieve if you weren't expecting to survive it. This was not the same as the Sonic Rainboom that Rainbow Dash would later perform, where she went supersonic, but was the origin of the Sonic Rainboom legend.
