Bats startle easily. As small animals, they're prey for some hungry predators, like owls, cats, and many other carnivorous creatures. Perhaps the main reason bats are nocturnal is because there are more aerial predators during the day than at night. So it's safer for them to fly out at night when there are less carnivorous animals than there are during the day. Of course, people (and ponies) might be dangerous as well, especially since we fear them and try to swat them away. So try not to rush at them if you want to see a bat up close. And if it's fallen, DO NOT PICK IT UP! It most likely succumbed to rabies, which is just as lethal to them as for us humans.
There's one more vampire fruit bat left to submit, until something else occurs.
