No joke, I couldn't help but thought a lot about how the whole 'Moons' thing can be translated into actual time. Kinda like to theorize about stuff like this. Feeling in the holes.

Also, this could be a guide for me if I want to use 'moons' for telling time.

So, here's what I put together over months and me justifing the 'one week' idea (as you can see I may had spend to much time on this). I used the Wikia as information source:

———————————————————

IF: 1 Moon 1 Week Examples: - 100 Moons (between Apple Family Reunions) 100 weeks = 25 months = ~2 years

— 30 Moons (Magic Mirror postal opens) 30 weeks = 7.5 months - 1000 Moons (friendship relation between Equestria and Yakyakistan) 1000 weeks = 250 months = 20 years

— 48 Moons (Ponyville snail hibernation) 48 weeks = 12 months = 1 year Lot of people think it's a month, because our Moon goes through it's cycle in around 29 days, so in a month. Lot of old writing also used Moon as time measurement, what are also can be translated to a month. But with canon example from the show, for me, that doesn't make sense, because so many of them would become unrealisticly long. IF: 1 Moon 1 Month

Examples:

— 100 Moons (between Apple Family Reunions) 100 months = ~8 years - 30 Moons (Magic Mirror postal opens) 30 months = 2,5 years

— 1000 Moons (friendship relation between Equestria and Yakyakistan) 1000 months = ~83 years - 48 Moons (Ponyville snail hibernation) 48 months = 4 year

While at first glance they don't as bad, but just taking one example it's not going to make sense. We have one event in the show that happened two times and we know how much time is inbetween the two. The Apple Family Reunion.

The first one happened when Twilight first came to Ponyville (S01E01). We know there's a reunion happening as Applejack's mentions it in the episode 'Applebuck Season' (S01E04):

"Twilight Sparkle: What about all those relatives I've met when I first came to Ponyville? Can't they help?

Applejack: [sigh] They were just here for the Apple family reunion."

Second one happens in it's own episode (S03E08).

Usually in television shows one season actually can be translated to a year. But in this case there was episodes that's about an event, which than can be connected to a season. Like Running of the Leaves (Fall Weather Friends) as it's about stomping off the fall leaves of the trees, so somewhere in fall. Than there's Hearth's Warming Eve, which is the pony version of Christmas.

Looking at how many of those events happened between the two episodes, 8 years is too long, but 2 years sounds more reasonable.

Off course this is not perfect as, this is just assumption on my part, some episode aired differently to the in universe cronolagical order. Like Winter Wrap Up (S01E11), with an event that takes place at the end of winter airs before Fall Weather Friends (S01E12). Hard to think that a WHOLE year passed between two episodes next to each other. Plus human equivalent of pony celebration can be different when it takes place, like we can say Nightmare Night is the pony version of Halloween, but that doesn't mean it also takes place in the fall, during October.

In the end, probably 'Moons' really can't be translated into logical human time equivalent. The show created just used it if they didn't wanted to say an exact time.XD

Btw, in head-canon, Luna changed the look of the moon each night, as she hoped it would make ponies more interested in her night.
Celestia could have changed it when she ruled alone, but refused. She wanted to see her sister every night (and maybe also because of guilt).
