1.)

"Now if we dress just right, don't burn dinner, say exactly the right things, there's a SLIGHT chance this won't be disaster!!!"

"Do I really have to wear this?"

"Yes."

back when twilight was still holding onto the idea that MAYBE her parents could warm up to the idea of rainbow, twilight had proposed they hold a dinner party for her parents — begging her mother to at least give things a try. Velvet agreed, though reluctantly — and so Twilight spent the week leading up to it freaking out and making sure everything was perfect.

It's very uncharacteristic for Rainbow to wear a necklace like that, but Twilight was trying REALLY hard to appeal to her mother and her way of thinking — and idk i have headcanons about formal/semi formal/casual wear. for something between formal and casual its like usually something just around the neck/front of the pony. rainbow wanted a bow tie, but again, twilight really wanted things to appeal to her mother and pushed her towards something more feminine.

2.) the dinner itself was, despite their best efforts, a disaster. it was mostly awkward silence, with the occasional very passive aggressive and underhanded comment from velvet, and very weak compliments on the food from night light. any attempt at a proper conversation seemed to die before they could take off
(this drawing is saved on my computer as "awks din dins." — also didnt draw twilight or night light bc it just got messy. theyre in the kitchen about to bring dessert out idk).

3.) After HOURS of uncomfortable awkward silence, Night Light and Velvet make their way to leave. Just before they go, and they're saying goodbyes, Night Light pulls Rainbow aside.

"You seem like a wonderful young mare, miss Dash," Night Light said, a warm grin spread across his face, "and I trust that you've a level head on you."

"Uh… thanks, sir," Rainbow stuttered, slightly taken back by his kindness.

"That's why, I'm sure you won't be offended when I say you're simply not suited to date my daughter. Through no fault of your own."

"What?"

"I'm sure you are an excellent flyer, a magnificent wonderbolt, a mare going on to do great things. But our little Twili isn't a match for you. Beyond anything but friendship at the very least. She's simply a little confused, bless her."

"I.. don't think she is."

Night Light smiled, "It's sweet that you believe that, but I'm afraid she is. She just needs some time to figure that out. and when she does, well…. I'm sure you'll understand. It's a shame you have to be caught up in the mess of it all, though."

Rainbow was speechless, mouth gaped open. She struggled to think of a retort that wouldn't make twilight angry at her for swearing at her parents.

Before she could say anything, though, Night Light patted her head, and rather vigorously tousled her mane.

"Still, we'll see you around I suppose! Lovely to meet you, Miss Dash."

4.) meanwhile!!

"Well, we did as you asked, Twili. Didn't we try to give her a chance?"

"I, well…"

"And well, I really don't mean to be rude, Twili, but tonight was rather a mess, wasn't it? You did all that you could, but I really don't think this Rainbow mare is good for you," Velvet prattled on, "Honestly, a mare like her? She might be a wonderbolt, but she has the table manners of a donkey! I can't possibly see what you're seeing."

Twilight said nothing. She pursed her lip, looking down to the ground with a guilty look.

Velvets eyes softened, and she gave Twilight a sickly sweet smile, "Come on, sweetheart, you know that I'm right on this," Velvet stepped forward, "It's just not very becoming of a mare of your status. You need to consider that, and what it says about me, if my daughter were to stay with a… this, mare. Why, canterlots elite would have my head!"

"Right, of course, I know." Twilight sighed.

"That's my dear. I suppose this is a learning experience for all of us, hm? We all make mistakes…but we should always work to right them! Correct?"

Twilight nodded.

"That's my girl. Now — make sure you do what's best, dear. I'll hear from you soon."

——-

after this whole ordeal, twilight apologises to rainbow for ever making her dress up like that and try to be something that she's not, and for putting her in such a humiliating position in front of her parents. Rainbow in her vry… rainbow self is like "Yeah. that sucked lol." …. but she apprecites her trying, or whatever, and besides its on them for being such stick in the muds.

Twilight never makes Rainbow do anything like that again — and in future meetings with twi's parents, rainbow is a lot less held back. she WILL swear in night lights face. she does not care if her kids or flurry is right there with her. sometimes u just gotta.

side note im a touch inconsistent in how i write velvet, but i think its like. striking a balance. she's a manipulator, nd night light is an enabler — and early on her bitterness only really comes out in bursts — but the more time twilight spends with rainbow, and thus listens less and less to her mothers advice, the more outwardly bitter towards her she becomes.
does that make sense? idk

anyway bye
