Backstory: Neko had a fairly happy childhood. Before she started going to school, her dad would take her to concerts of her favorite bands, and that's how Neko developed her love of rock music and had dreams of being a rock star someday. It wasn't until when Neko was in her early teens that she discovered the goth/emo subculture and eventually becoming one. At the same time she became a goth, she started having cat-like behaviors, such as napping during the day, and climbing up a tree. Due to the stress from issues related to school and such, Neko rebelled against authority figures, which caused some experts to believe that she had ODD (Oppositional defiant disorder), though Neko refused to acknowledge she had it. However, with the help of therapy, Neko was able to control her anger outbursts, but she still had her rebellious personality. Since therapy, Neko was gifted a guitar as part of a Hearth's Warming gift, and has practiced it, either as a coping mechanism, or for her future career.

When Neko was old enough to have a career in rock music, she began touring while also writing new material. At one point, she dated Stanley Steel, who was also a rock singer, but their relationship was rather rocky, with Neko breaking up with him after finding out that he had been disloyal to her. In the end, however, they both wished to be on better terms with each other.

Eventually, Neko developed a crush on a stallion who was much more calm and friendly to her and she had ever imagined: Blossom Breeze. However the problem was that Blossom spent more time with another mare named Clover Sparks, and Neko assumed that they were dating. Neko, Blossom, and Clover soon met Destiny Blood, Irene Sky, Sweet Peach, and Super Pop after their connection to the Special Gems, forming the Squad, with Neko Star representing the Gem of Gratitude. At first, Neko was unsure how she represented gratitude, until she realized that every good and bad thing she went through was a learning experience, and these things shaped her up as the pony she is now, but she doesn't force other ponies to be grateful just because they went through a difficulty because she knows it could do more harm than good. While Neko admires that there are ponies out there who look up to her, she believes that every pony deserves to be treated equal, and chooses not to be put on a pedestal. Neko is also very protective of The Squad, and her cat-like behaviors sometimes help The Squad find some answers to mysteries.

I wanted to change some parts of Neko's design just so it would be simple while also remaining faithful to her old design, but when she was first redesigned, I was disappointed in how it turned out. As usual, I didn't want to change her design much and only changed the parts of her that I felt was necessary. It's worth mentioning that her cutie mark was the most changed.
