I've been just sketching recently, trying to branch out my expressions and build up my character "repertoire" a bit, and by far the best learning has come from trying to replicate aspects of others' artwork, including the official MLP comics. (My latest obsession has been Fanzeem though, whose art is sooo expressive: twitter.com/fanzeem/status/1… ).
It feels good to learn a new trick, as well as to better understand an old one. Like noses, for instance, I feel like I'm finally able to consistently get what I want when I draw them, even though sometimes they can be inconsistent. I also struggled getting eye shapes on the head with perspective for a while, but I'm getting to a point where it doesn't take very long to get them looking right anymore. That being said, I do struggle with using some of the more unique eye shapes in the show, so I draw them all as ovals, for now at least.
As far as the characters go, I really like how Trixie and Sunburst turned out. Trixie definitely has some "Dreamworks Face" going on (which in this instance is a good thing), and Sunburst just looks good.
Diamond Tiara looks fuckin' pissed, which is her natural state of being of course.
Cadence is being cute, which is impossible for her not to be.
Tree Hugger is well…Tree Hugger.
Marble Pie is happy about something, and whatever it is, she deserves it.
