My interpretation of the scene.

Some were merely curious, others outright aggressive, and some looked down on her, or saw her as mysterious.. Being different can suck, but on the bright side you end up as awesome as Zecora.

Watching through "for the first time again", since it's been a long while, this episode was great. There was a lot to show, so I figured the one spot to really draw was when Zecora first spoke. No glowing eyes of terror, no mysterious magics, just a lone pony feeling just a tad surrounded by a bunch of colourful but complete strangers after leaving what she was beginning to believe was a ghost town..
Yeah, that would scare the hell out of me too. She slipped away into the mist, giving just a warning as she went. "Beware, beware, pony folk! Those leaves of blue are not a joke! Beware!"
