Moonstone shifted from hoof to hoof as she waited for Twilight to finish preparing the mirror. Or rather, pretending to prepare the mirror; there wasn't much to do other than checking that everything was connected and maybe wiping of the surface. Still, Twilight busied herself with the cables as they both kept glancing towards the door, waiting for the third family member.
"They have to be waiting on the other side at this point", Moonstone finally said to break the silence. "Should we""
"She'll be even more upset if she's not here", Twilight interrupted. "I'll have to find a way to make this up to her as it is, I'm not gonna make it worse."
Moonstone just shrugged helplessly, and they went back to waiting. Eventually, just as Moony was about to go and check on her, Rarity finally arrived. In style.
"Wow", Twilight started. "Rarity, you
"Look absolutely stunning!", Moony broke in, jumping between them a practised grin on her face. "I love your necklace, I haven't seen it before! Did you make it yourself? You should have told me, you know I like to practice gem-cutting…"
"Why, thank you dear! Yes, I'm sorry, but I wanted it to be a suprise…" Rarity kept on explaining her newest accessory, as Moony led her towards the side of the mirror.
"Sorry", she murmured as she passed Twilight. "We need to open it now, they've been waiting for too long"
"That's my cutie-mark."
"And she's wearing her wedding-ring. You're really gonna have to work to reassure her this time", Moony tilted her head, looking over at her mom with a considering look. "…I'm gonna want to spend the night at Aunt Sweetie's aren't I?"
"Yeah, that's probably a good idea"
"…"
"Well, should we get this thing started?", Rarity interruped the silence as she suddenly activated the portal.
They both jumped, and turned to face the now swirling surface, as three shapes came wobbling out. Two seemed to quickly get their bearing, while the smaller third one, squeaked, fell over and squeaked again as it tried to cover itself.
As Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle began their excited greetings with Rarity and Twilight Sparkle, Moonstone studied her… cousin? Half-sister? …Cousinsister? Newest family member. Midsummer Sun, a scrawny-looking young teenager, who was trying to not look at anyone as she blushed profusely. Her mane was loosely curled and slightly messy, tied up into a pony-tail. Her fetlocks were untrimmed, and her hooves unplished, matching the unbrushed nature of her coat. Then again, she didn't have fur before, Moony reminded herself. She seemed slightly scared, and unsure about what to do when her parents prompted her to say hello. Just crossing her forelegs in front of her, and whispering loudly to her parents about not having pants.
This was gonna be a fun visit.

After a way too long time spent exchanging pleasantries, and "how-much-you've-grown" and reassuring Midsummer that there would only be females present (Why would that matter? Moony hoped her cousinsister wasn't some kind of misandrist…) they finally made their way to the sitting room. Luckily, it seemed that Midsummer got over her hangups as she got used to being a pony. She was currently exitedly talking to the two Twilights about magic, and the possibility of learning some basic spells. She practically vibrated with glee when her mother showed of the light spell she'd learned last time she was here. Not to mention the jumping up and down and giggling loudly when Moonstone's Twilight teleported. Moony couldn't help but grin a bit; definently related to Twilight Sparkle alright.
Meanwhile, on her other side, her mom and Sunset did what they always did when seeing each other.
"Why, just the last week, Twilight and I went on this lovely cruise to Haywaii…"
"Yeah, me and Twilight were able to get tickets to Sapphire Shore's latest show, it was amazing…"
Trying to upstage each other over who were the better couple, with the better family, and the most interesting dates. Moony guess she can sort of get it; knowing that your wife could have chosen someone else, and indeed did in an alternate reality, would be pretty bruising for ones self-esteem. But, after years of having listened to this she was all out of sympathy, and just face-planted the table in frustration.
"Dear, what have we said about heads on the table?"
Moony raised her head again a few inches.
"Right, so as I was saying…."
The conversation droned on, and Moonstone wished Spike were there, he was always good at making boring talks seem fun. But, ever since the dog-Spike… went to greener pastures, other Twilight got really upset when seeing dragon-Spike. So he got to stay over at Sweetie's instead. Lucky.
She had just exused herself to go to the bathroom, when her cousinsister came literally bounding over, her horn glowing slightly.
"Hi, so I'm so so sorry about freaking out before! I'm not really used to this whole new species and new customsthing? But, it's nice to meet you anyway! This place is really, really cool and all magical; I know my mom's said it would be, but I never imagine this! Your name is Twilight Moonstone, right? Why are you named the same as mom, isn't that confusing? Also, I don't mean to be rude, but why don't you have a horn? Everyone else here does. Do we drop them and then new ones grow like deer? Also"
Normally, this kind of barrage of questions would make most ponies reel, but Moony grew up being babysat by Pinkie and were friends with her son. So she was just waiting for the quetions to end, as she mentally prepared what she would need to respond to. She was distracted though, as Midsummer's horn just glowed brighter and brighter. She was starting to look around for what she was using her magic on, but all she could see being affected was the paper her mother was currently levitating.
She pasued mentally. Something was nagging her, something here didn't add up.
Alright, let's go through this carefully. One, Midsummer doesn't know how to control her magic; this power she's channeling must be instinctive.
Two, if it keeps building up, it's going to have to go somewhere.
Three, she hasn't learend any spells to weave the magic into, but she is too old to know any foal-instinctive spells. Therefore, with no spells applied, it must become force and light.
Four, energy discharges isn't very dangerous; what usually happens is that your hair get's a bit singed and you have to blink away spots.
Four, addendum; that does not apply if she is the daughter of two of the most powerful unicorns in modern history.
"Oh, horse-apples"
As four head swiveled to face them, two already starting a reprimand about appropriate language, Moonstone was slammed by a wall of light and lifted of the ground in quite an impressive arc over her panicked parents.

Ah, haha, this took way too long to do. I don't know how to write stories, why did I try to write a story?? Feedback on how to write stories is appreciated.
Anyway, introducing Midsummer Sun, my next gen for SciTwi and Sunset Shimmer. I like the ship, and I thought it would make for fun interactions if the two Twilights aren't married to different versions of the same person. I wasn't sure about Rarity and Sunset's interaction, but I think Rarity would be quite possesive about her partner? Not as in telling Twilight not to do something/see someone, but just trying to upstage whoever she deemed competition.
Next part coming at… some point in the future.
